Digital media has permeated every aspect of our culture, prompting artists of all stripes to respond to the cultural changes it brings. Some artists dive deep into the technology (learning programming, electronics, etc) while others — painters, sculptors, installation artists — repurpose technologies “off the shelf,” not necessarily designed for artistic practice. This class will focus on the second strategy of detournement or cultural “hacking” existing technologies. It is designed to foster dialogue and experimentation across the studio areas and the idea of dialogue is essential to how we will approach creative production during the course of the term.
